An Extended Kiwi Layover

It turns out that actually getting to Antarctica from New Zealand can be a bit tricky! When our original flight was delayed by 24 hours it was exciting to have an unexpected free day to explore Christchurch (our first two days had been filled with ice trainings and fittings for our extreme cold weather clothing). After spending the day in Diamond Harbor, a quick ferry ride across the bay from Lyttleton, my coworkers, Alyssa & Jesse, and I were tuckered out and ready to get up early and catch our newly scheduled flight to the ice!

We woke bright and early this morning at 4:30am to catch the shuttle to our Ice Flight. After chugging coffee and while giving one more phone call home before deploying to McMurdo we received word from the US Antarctic Program that our flight had been delayed...again! So after a quick morning nap we set off to explore the coastal areas of Christchurch for another day.
